AN INTERESTING 11mm (GRAS) SINGLE-SHOT BOLT-ACTION SERVICE RIFLE, MODEL '1874', serial no. 48882,
circa 1880, with 27 1/2in. sighted barrel, octagonal receiver marked 'MLE 1874' and 'M80', turned down bolt (miss-numbered), plain walnut three-quarter stock with brass furniture, two brass barrel-bands and a brass nose-cap (missing cleaning rod), the right hand side of butt with applied nickel-silver shield engraved 'CAPTURED BY H.M.S. PHILOMEL FROM AFGHAN GUN RUNNERS, PERSIAN GULF, DEC 6 '09'

Other Notes: H.M.S. Philomel was one of nine 'Pearl'-class cruisers. She was commissioned in 1890 and served throughout the Mediterranean and Persian Gulf areas until being sold to New Zealand in 1914. She was eventually de-commissioned in 1947 and finally scuttled in 1949
